Enjoy Life, Enjoy God
THE CHIEF END
September 7, 2010
The Westminster Catechism, one of the great documents the church ever produced, is a series of one hundred Q&As. But the first question is the most famous:
Q: What is the chief end of man? A: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and enjoy him forever."
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. - Romans 11:36 TNIV
Yet we are taught from infancy that the purpose of life is self-fulfillment. That difference in direction and purpose is a matter of 180 degrees. And it confronts us with a decision. The Puritan prayerbook, The Valley of Vision, understood and committed to Question #1, but do we?
"There is nothing that deserves my greatest care, that calls forth my ardent desires. That is, that I may answer the great end for which I am made--verily life is not worth having if it be not improved for this noble purpose."
Joyfully,
