FOLLOW YOUR HEART
August 25, 2010
"Follow your heart" is common counsel these days. But is it true? Is it the way of Christ?
The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?
- Jeremiah 17:9 TNIV
The Word of God seems to offer quite different counsel than the word on the street. To be sure, it's helpful to listen to one's heart, but that does not mean it speaks to us the truth, or that which is helpful. Truth is, often our hearts lead us to the whim, away from discipleship. Further I suspect it's the romantic poets that summon us to follow our hearts, while the Word of God says, "Better not, your heart will get you into trouble." The poets have won the day, but that doesn't make them right.
The great saint prayed, "Help me to honour thee by believing before I feel, for great is the sin if I make feeling a cause of faith." The heart is about feeling, not trusting Christ. Discipleship is not founded on feeling, but is about faith, believing God's Word
Joyfully,
